The Phelan family has owned a ranch in Cambria, on California's central coast, three miles from the Pacific, since 1851. In 2019 it was leased by Rajat Parr, a leading sommelier turned grower, next to the ungrafted Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines that Greg Phelan had planted in 2007.
On alluvial and volcanic soils, regenerative farming without tillage and without copper or sulphur is practised, based on infusions of plants and seaweed. Grapes from the Jura, Savoie and Galicia, such as Mencía, have been grafted. Native yeasts, neutral barrel and hand bottling, unfined, unfiltered and with no added sulphites.
